New Candidate for Woodbury City Council

Mike Thissen says he would bring a “common-sense approach” to city government.

Mike Thissen is running for a seat on the Woodbury City Council.

Thissen, who has lived in Woodbury since 1996, works as a health inspector with the city of Bloomington. He is also the president of a Fairway Meadows homeowner association.

The 42-year-old said part of the reason for his run is a general frustration with responses from over “reasonable requests.”

Specifically, he noted the and found the response from city staff and council members lacking.

There are two seats up for election this year. Both incumbents are running for a third term.

Thissen said he has experience dealing with city councils and county boards.

“I know how things run,” he said.

Managing development and growth, along with traffic, are among Thissen’s chief concerns, and while he said the city has generally done “a very good job,” he feels it’s time for new blood at City Hall.

“I’m a common-sense guy. I’m reasonable. And I always respond to people,” he said.

If elected, Thissen said he wouldn’t shy away from trying new things and said he would like to look into the possibility of a community center and/or swimming area for Woodbury.

Thissen is married with four children, three boys and a girl.

He has coached youth baseball was also involved with head coaching flag football last year, and helping coach third- and fourth-grade tackle football the last two seasons (last year they and competed in nationals in Houston, TX). Thissen is helping with third- and fifth-grade tackle football this season.

Glad to see new candidates get into the race. The same people term after term is unhealthy and prevents a fresh perspective.

We've got another one. Just found out Joe Grinols has filed. Left him a message, I'll post something as soon as I talk to him.

The council faces may change, but the perspective you seek isn't unless there's more accountability from the people actually running the show at City Hall. The lesson of the Woodbury Drive reconstruction project is that the council defers to the City Administrator, City Engineer, et al., who have their own agendas, are not elected and will be around long after council is gone.

One more: Mark Doree. We'll see if anyone else files within the hour here. But that brings us up to five for two seats.
