Local Athena Award Winners

Some of the top scholar-athletes from area schools will be honored at an April 18 ceremony.

Three local student-athletes have been selected to receive the St. Paul Area Athena Award, according to a release from South Washington County Schools.

’s Emily Bonfig, ’s Taylor Paulson and Allie Morse, from Park, were recently honored with the Athena, which recognizes female students for their athletic achievements.

A ceremony for the St. Paul city and suburban winners is set for 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at the Prom Center in Oakdale. For tickets, call Kathy McIntyre of the St. Paul Area Athena Awards Committee at 651-645-1858.

Bonfig earned four all-state awards as a diver, and was an MVP for the Royals twice and served as captain one year. She also participates in Key Club and the National Honor Society, and was an AP scholar with honors. She plans to attend Harvard and study biochemical engineering. (.)

Paulson, a varsity soccer and basketball player, was a captain for both teams her senior year and earned the Eagle Award from New Life Academy. She was also part of the school’s German Club and is a member of the National Honor Society. Paulson plans to attend Calvin College and study exercise science.

Morse, a soccer, lacrosse and hockey player, earned all-state honors for her play on the ice and is a member of the Park Link Crew.

The keynote speaker for the April 18 event is Jane Helmke, KARE 11 news director. KARE 11-TV sports anchor Randy Shaver will again emcee this year’s ceremony honoring each young woman and her specific achievements.

The Athena Awards Committee is comprised of representatives of St. Paul city and suburban schools, parents of previous award winners, and business volunteers.
